Results for the centerfire handgun five silhouette self defense and hanging plate matches held on August 16th, 2025
It was a very humid day at the range for the centerfire handgun 5 silhouette self defense and centerfire handgun hanging plate competitions.
We held the five silhouette self defense match first. In this competition, there are five silhouettes placed at a distance of 10, 13, 15, 17 and 20 feet from the firing line. The shooter starts behind a barricade at the low ready position. At the sound of the start buzzer, the shooter must step from behind the barricade and engage the center target first and then the other targets at the shooter’s discretion. Scoring is accomplished by taking the shooter’s time, multiply that by five and then subtract that from the shooting score totaled from the scoring rings on the target. Each shooter runs through this twice with the individual scores added together for a total score with the higher the score, the better. We had 11 members and two guests shooting and the results were:
In a repeat of the last TWO years, Ross Mantei used his CZ75 in 9mm to take first place with a total score of 52.25. Amazing job, Ross!
In a very close second place was Devin Maine. He used his Rock Island 1911 in .45 ACP to score a total of 51.50. Incredible shooting, Devin!
Tony Rodriguez took third place by using his Kimber 1911 in .45 ACP to score 47.60. Way to go, Tony!
In fourth place was Gary Wilk. He used his Walther P99 in 9mm to score 44.95. Outstanding showing, Gary!
In the hanging plate match, a set of six 6 inch plates are set at a distance of 15 yards. The shooter must shoot the plates from left to right with the fastest time winning. Missing plates adds five seconds per miss to the shooter’s time. Again, each shooter runs through this twice for a total time with the lower score the better. We once more had had 11 members and two guests participating in this match and the results were:
Scott Stohr used his Czechmate in 9mm to have two clean runs for a first place finish. His total time was 11.16 seconds.
In second place was Devin Maine. He used his Sig P320 in 9mm for a total time of 18.88 seconds. More incredible shooting, Devin!
Joe Hodge took third place by using his Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 mag (that’s right, a REVOLVER) for a total run time of 38.50 seconds. Very impressive, Joe!
In fourth place again was Gary Wilk. He used his Walther Q5 in 9mm to have a total run time of 39.84 seconds. Another outstanding showing, Gary!
Honorable mention goes to guest Ben Wilk. He used his father’s Walther to score 37.11 seconds. That would have been good enough to put him in third place. Way to be fast, Ben!
On a side note, one of our plate hangers broke during the competition. We were unable to locate the spares that the club owns, so the second run was shot using five plates instead of six. This made the run times a little faster.
Please join us next Saturday, the 23rd of August for a range maintenance day. Work starts at 0800 and continues until about 11 or 12. The range complex will be closed to shooting during this time. After work, there will be drinks and a small lunch served.
The next competitions will be held on August 30th. These will be the rimfire rifle ballon and the rimfire handgun split bowling pin matches. Please see the match rules on the club’s website for further information on how these matches are run. We will have a short practice run for the split pin match after the work day.
As always, please let an officer know if you have any questions or concerns.
Regards,
Scott
