Results for the rimfire and centerfire handgun ballon competitions held on January 24h, 2026

While it didn’t actually rain on us today, the range was a muddy mess and it was cold with a very, very brisk wind. As you can imagine, a windy day for a ballon match makes things extremely challenging.

Both the rimfire and centerfire handgun matches are held using the same format. Shooters fire at four 8 inch, then four 6 inch and finally, four 4 inch balloons at a distance of 25 yards. These balloons are hung from a rope stretched across the range using strings. This means that the balloons swing with the slightest gust of wind…and they were really swinging today! Scoring is done by counting the number of shots a shooter has to take to hit all of the balloons with a maximum of four shots per balloon in order, from left to right. If the shooter misses on the fourth shot, they move to the…

Results for the centerfire rifle 400 yard bench and bullseye competitions held on January 10th, 2026

The competition season for 2026 is now officially underway! It was a little chilly and very, very windy for the centerfire rifle 400 yard bench and off-elbows bullseye competitions.

The bench match was held first. This competition is held by shooting three five shot groups off a bench rest at 400 yards. The two best (smallest) groups are measured and the worst (largest) group is thrown out. These two groups are then added together for total aggregate measurement. We had 12 members participating in this event and the results were:

Kaci Maine used a Remington 6BR to take first  place. She shot an amazing 3.906 inch total group size. That would be outstanding even if the wind wasn’t blowing like crazy! In fact, it was only .3 inches larger than her groups last year.

In second place, was Devin Maine. He used his Seekins 6.5 Creedmoor to shoot a total…

Results for the Black Rifle bullseye and the centerfire handgun Texas Star competitions held on September 27th, 2025

The weather was absolutely beautiful at the range for the Black Rifle bullseye and centerfire handgun Texas Star competitions.

The Black Rifle match was held first. This competition involves using AR-15 clones with iron sights only at bullseye targets set at 100 and 200 yards. The 100 yard targets are shot standing off hand (10 rounds). The first 200 yard portion is another 10 rounds shot standing or sitting. The final stage is another 10 rounds fired from the standing, sitting or prone positions. The scores for each stage are totaled with a perfect score being 300 and ties are broken by the number of Xs hit. We had 12 members and two guests participating in this event and the results were:

Devin Maine finished in first with a score of 242. Awesome performance, Devin!

In second place was Raymond Fox. He scored 231. Way to go, Raymond!

Scott Stohr…

Results for the rimfire rifle steel silhouette competition held on September 13th, 2025

It was another very hot day with little wind  for the  rimfire rifle steel silhouette match.

For this match, small (and I do mean SMALL) steel silhouettes in the shapes of animals are placed on railroad ties at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards with 10 targets being at each stage. The shooters, using rifles chambered in .22lr, proceed through each station, shooting the silhouettes from left to right and taking only one shot at each one with a five minute time limit. Each hit counts as one point and high hit count wins, with a perfect score being 40. We had 11 members and one guest participating and the results were:

Scott Stohr took first place buy using his Remington 597 to score 20.

In second place was Devin Maine. He used  his vintage Browning SA22 to hit 18 targets. Proving once again, that no matter what gun he…

Results for the rimfire rifle balloon and rimfire hand gun split bowling pin matches held on August 30th, 2025

The day was blazing hot and there was very little wind at the range for the rimfire rifle balloon and the rimfire handgun split pin matches.

The rimfire rifle balloon match was held first. This competition involves using a .22 LR rifle to shoot at four 6 inch and then four 4 inch balloons at 25 yards. Lastly, four 8 inch balloons are shot at 50 yards. All shots are fired standing, off hand without support and the balloons are hung from strings that hang from a rope stretched across the range. That means a perfect score would be 12. Since there was very little wind, we had some pretty low scores. We had 15 members participating in this match and the results were:

There were three shooters who had perfect scores. They were Kaci Maine, Ross Mantei, and Scott Stohr. In a brief shoot off at four inch balloons…

Results for the centerfire handgun five silhouette self defense and hanging plate matches held on August 16th, 2025

It was a very humid day at the range for the centerfire handgun 5 silhouette self defense and centerfire handgun hanging plate competitions.

We held the five silhouette self defense match first. In this competition, there are five silhouettes placed at a distance of 10, 13, 15, 17 and 20 feet from the firing line. The shooter starts behind a barricade at the low ready position. At the sound of the start buzzer, the shooter must step from behind the barricade and engage the center target first and then the other targets at the shooter’s discretion. Scoring is accomplished by taking the shooter’s time, multiply that by five and then subtract that from the shooting score totaled from the scoring rings on the target. Each shooter runs through this twice with the individual scores added together for a total score with the higher the score, the better. We had 11…

Results for the centerfire rifle steel silhouette and the make up Vintage rifle matches held on August 2nd, 2025

It was very hot with little wind blowing, but that’s normal for August. Today we held the centerfire rifle steel silhouette and Vintage rifle bullseye matches. The Vintage rifle competition was a make up for when we had to cancel it previously this year.

For the steel competition, there are five steel, man sized silhouettes placed at various distances from 100-200 yards. The shooter starts with their back to the targets, with their rifle on the table unloaded, bolt in the open position and the safety engaged. At the sound of the buzzer, the shooter turns, loads their rifle and must engage the center target, which is at 100 yards, first with the other targets engaged at the shooters discretion. If a target is not hit after four rounds are fired, the shooter must move to the next target and they get a five second penalty. Scoring is done by…

Results for the Nimrod 3 gun match held on July 19th 2025

It was pretty humid out at the range but with a nice breeze blowing for the Nimrod 3 gun match.

For this competition, each shooter uses three different firearms, a .22 rifle, a centerfire handgun and a centerfire rifle, prepositioned at three different stages on the range. At each stage the weapon is clear with an open chamber, magazine removed (or cylinder open) and safety on (if available). The first stage involves the .22 rifle fired at six small animal (chicken) steel silhouettes placed at 50 yards. The shooter starts with their back to the table and upon the start buzzer, must turn, load the weapon and fire one shot per target from left to right. After completing this stage, the shooter must clear the weapon, lay it on the table and then proceed to the second stage.

The second stage is the centerfire handgun fired at bowling pins placed…

Results for the CMP service pistol and centerfire handgun bowling pin matches held on July 5th 2025

It rained lightly most of the morning but the real heavy rain held off until we were done with the CMP Service Pistol and the centerfire handgun bowling pin matches.

The CMP Service Pistol match was held first and is conducted in three stages. The first stage is shot at a bullseye target at 50 yards. Each shooter fires 10 shots in 10 minutes. We then go down and score that round. The next round is held at 25 yards by firing five rounds in 20 seconds, then another five shots in 20 seconds. That stage is then scored. The final stage is also held at 25 yards. For this round, shooters fire five shots in 10 seconds. This is also done twice and then scored. Scoring is done by counting the hits in each scoring ring and then adding those three totals together. This means that a total of…
