Results for the rimfire rifle balloon and rimfire hand gun split bowling pin matches held on August 30th, 2025
The day was blazing hot and there was very little wind at the range for the rimfire rifle balloon and the rimfire handgun split pin matches.
The rimfire rifle balloon match was held first. This competition involves using a .22 LR rifle to shoot at four 6 inch and then four 4 inch balloons at 25 yards. Lastly, four 8 inch balloons are shot at 50 yards. All shots are fired standing, off hand without support and the balloons are hung from strings that hang from a rope stretched across the range. That means a perfect score would be 12. Since there was very little wind, we had some pretty low scores. We had 15 members participating in this match and the results were:
There were three shooters who had perfect scores. They were Kaci Maine, Ross Mantei, and Scott Stohr. In a brief shoot off at four inch balloons at 50 yards, Ross, who used his Kidd 10/22, missed first, giving him third place. Scott Stohr, who used his Remington 597 missed next giving him second place. That means Kaci, using her Kidd 10/22 took first place. Great shooting to the three of you!
Devin Maine used his vintage Browning SA22 to only have one miss for a score of 13 and taking fourth place. Terrific performance, Devin!
Next was the rimfire handgun split bowling pin match. Five bowling pins are set on stands at a distance of 10 yards. These pins have had the tops sawed off. For this competition, the tops are rested on the bottoms and the tops must be shot off the bottoms from left to right, then the bottoms must be shot off the stands from left to right. If a top is missed, or if the bottom falls off the stand with the top, the shooter incurs a 10 second penalty per miss. If just a bottom is missed, then a five second penalty is added to the shooter’s time. Each shooter goes through this twice with time and any penalties added together for a total run time. We had 13 members and one guest participating in this match and the results were:
Devin Maine took first place by using his Ruger 22/45 for a total run time of 35.09 seconds. WAY faster than the competition! Another terrific performance, Devon!
In a distant second place was Scott Stohr. He used a Volquartsen Black Mamba to achieve a total run time of 50.12 seconds.
Ross Mantei took third place by also using a Black Mamba for a total run time of 52.61 seconds. Another great round of shooting, Ross!
In fourth place was Kaci Maine. She used a Ruger 22/45 to get a total run time of 57.73 seconds. That’s the way to do it, Kaci!
The next competition will be held on September 13th. This will be the rimfire rifle steel silhouettes at a distance of 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. Please see the match rules on the club’s website for further information on how these matches are run.
